Rectangular photoeyes with round threaded lens detect presence several ways: diffuse with background suppression (light reflects from the target object back to the sensor), retroreflective (object interrupts light rebounding off a fixed reflector), or through-beam (object obstructs light traveling from an emitter to a receiver). Models are available in a variety of sensing distances.
