12mm round metal photoeyes detect presence several ways: diffuse (light reflects from the target object back to the sensor), retroreflective (object interrupts light rebounding off a fixed reflector), or through-beam (object obstructs light traveling from an emitter to a receiver). Available models have a teach button for quick calibration.
